Extension and Restoration project for The Church of Scientology at Saint Hill, Sussex Bespoke Cast Stone

Bespoke restoration and extension project with colour matching from Chilstone’s experienced Architectural team.

Saint Hill Manor is a country house near East Grinstead in Sussex, built by Gibbs Crawfurd in 1792. It was bought by L. Ron Hubbard and became the British headquarters of the Church of Scientology after a large restoration project.

Saint Hill Manor is situated on 59 acres of landscaped gardens overlooking the hills of the Weald. The church wanted to restore, extend and preserve this historic monument, which is regarded as one of the finest 18th century sandstone building in Sussex and is open to the public all year round.

Chilstone were approached to design and colour match some distinguishing stone features for two projects as part of the extensive restoration and extension of the property.

The first project was two blend an extension with an existing building to create a spa for the members of the church. We had to match stonework including; quoins, sills and coping stones in a dusky pink colour. We supplied several colour samples for them to choose and produced the bespoke cast stone.

The second project was an extension to the existing main building. We once again made new quoins and coping stones to match the distinctive stonework. We supplied over 600 metres of stone which needed to be made and delivered within a tight time frame. We liaised throughout process with the project management team in America.

The new building was unveiled at their annual IAS event in October when 1000s of Scientologist’s attend their annual conference in this, the head-quarters. The client was extremely happy, with our work.
